Developing youth of character.
ABOUT US

Our
Story

Our story began with a knock on the door in 1995, when San Diego Youth Development Foundation founder and CEO Daniel “Danny” Villarreal was approached by a group of young, gang-involved artists looking for a positive outlet. They wanted a way to express themselves within their community through legal spray painting instead of tagging.

Drawing on his background in youth workforce development, gang prevention and intervention, and community engagement, Danny helped coordinate the first of many legal murals created by local youth throughout San Diego. Through both lived experience and years of prevention-focused youth advocacy, Danny recognized the importance of meeting young people where they are and investing in their passions, talents, and potential as a pathway toward positive growth and long-term community impact.

What began through art and mentorship evolved into a broader mission centered on developing youth of character through positive opportunities, leadership development, and community connection. This became the foundation for San Diego Youth Development Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since 2005.

Today, San Diego Youth Development Foundation continues to invest in the passions and potential of young people by creating meaningful opportunities through mentorship, athletics, arts, workforce readiness, leadership development, and community engagement. Our mission is to help youth turn their passions into positive impact while fostering strong character, purpose, and lasting generational change within the communities around them.
